TWO-DAY CONFERENCE OF VIOTIA FOR THE ENVIRONMENT
19th - 20th March 2003
Livadia - Aliartos
Viotia Region
In the frames of the campaign for the protection and proper management of the water resources and with the opportunity of the assumption of the European Union Presidency by our country, the European Organisation for Strategic Planning, the Technical University of Crete and the Prefecture of Viotia, organised on 19th and 20th March 2003 a two-day Conference in Livadia and Aliartos with subject:
"Environment and Complete Depopulation, Measures and Actions in Viotia"
The phenomenon of depopulation of lands in our country, is the most important and serious problem, since the extent of lands facing the problem overcomes the 30% of the total land of Greece.
Because the exhaustion of production of the lands and the reduction or depletion of the water resources day by day is extended - since the phenomenon is universal - the Greek bodies in collaboration with the UN International Organisations, UNCCD, have initiated a continuous effort to reduce the phenomenon in Greece.
Thus, the Greek Committee for the combat of complete depopulation was formed.
At the same time, the Greek Parliament since 1997 has validated the UN Convention for the combat of complete depopulation and various bodies and organisations (Ministry of Agriculture, National Observatory of Athens, Local Self-government) coordinate the activities in order to take measures and actions for the reduction of the phenomenon.
