European Conference of Self-government "Cultural Tourism and Self-government Organisations"
28th, 29th & 30th March 2008 - PEACE AND FRIENDSHIP STADIUM
The largest meeting of people of folklore culture in our country was held for the 2nd consecutive year at the Peace and Friendship Stadium on 28th, 29th and 30th March 2008.
The objective of the meeting was the collaboration of the Self-government organisations with the locally original expressers of the folklore culture, like cultural organisations, cultural associations and unions, folkloric museums and history museums as well as with physical persons like folklore craftsmen, researchers of tradition, writers and folklorists. This collaboration had as an ultimate target the highlighting of the original folklore spirit, the creation and the local tradition and identity.
Our country is perhaps the richest place in folkways and traditions in Europe. Traditions, which are lost through time regarding their origin but that, are still unaltered in modern times. Tradition is a part of the Greeks' life and a reference point wherever they might be in the world.
This richness, thus, was presented in the Conference for culture at the Peace and Friendship Stadium on 28th, 29th & 30th March 2008.
Aim of the Conference:
Greece is a country with an important cultural heritage that is called today to utilise the opportunity given to recourse its cultural development to the highest priority in the framework of the new United Europe. This will bring multiple changes: social, like protection of cultural identity, consciousness of cultural value and distinctiveness - political, like strengthening of the role and image of Greece which can compose and express culturally the wider European area, in the Balkan region as well as in the Eastern Mediterranean region - economical, as these are expressed as much with the connection culture-tourism as with the intervention in the labour market for the creation of new employment positions.
The distinctiveness of our country which has extraordinary natural beauty in combination with the existence of cultural tradition and monuments unique in the world, can offer economical and social development opportunities of monopolistic nature in Europe.
The cultural collaboration for the creation of the new United Europe, with the formation of a uniform European consciousness without at the same time to ignore the particular cultural tradition of each country, is a fundamental demand of these times.
The development of cultural tourism can form for our country a tool of multiple interventions aiming to:
- create cultural infrastructure as a necessary component of tourism development in the regions of the country,
- strengthen the development of the problematical and isolated areas,
- release the touristic motion from established touristic areas to new ones, from the coasts to the inland areas which have cultural elements,
- lengthen the touristic period and diminish the seasonality,
- attract tourists with cultural interests
EOSP, in its attempt to highlight the specific role of the Local Self-government in the formation of strategy and politics for the promotion of the cultural tourism on a local and regional level through the utilisation of the local cultural heritage, organised a conference at the Peace and Friendship Stadium on 28th, 29th and 30th March with subject: "Cultural Tourism and Self-government Organisations"

PARALLEL EVENTS
During the three days, in specially arranged places, the exhibitors will present their original, local folkloric culture through dance performances, enactments of customs, folklore theater, traditional music concerts, galanty show and daily life enactments. At the same time, special great tributes to music and dance tradition will be made, by local expressers of tradition from specific areas of our country.
